Emotional speech analysis in mediation and court environments

    Get PDF
When people communicate, their states of mind are coupled with the explicit content of the messages being transmitted. The implicit information conveyed by mental states is essential to correctly understand and frame the communication messages. In mediation, professional mediators include empathy as a fundamental skill when dealing with the relational and emotional aspects of a case. In court environments, emotion analysis intendsto point out stress or fear as indicators of the truthfulness of certain asserts. In commercial environments, such as call-centers, automatic emotional analysis through speech is focused to detect deception or frustration. Computational analysis of emotions focuses on gathering information from speech, facial expressions, body poses and movements to predict emotional states. Specifically, speech analysis has been reported as a valuable procedure for emotional state recognition. While some studies focus on the analysis of speech features to classify emotional states, others concentrate on determining the optimal classification performance. In this paper we analyze current approaches to computational analysis of emotions through speech and consider the replication of their techniques and findings in the domains of mediation and legal multimedia

Language resources and linked data: a practical perspective

Recently, experts and practitioners in language resources have started recognizing the benefits of the linked data (LD) paradigm for the representation and exploitation of linguistic data on the Web. The adoption of the LD principles is leading to an emerging ecosystem of multilingual open resources that conform to the Linguistic Linked Open Data Cloud, in which datasets of linguistic data are interconnected and represented following common vocabularies, which facilitates linguistic information discovery, integration and access. In order to contribute to this initiative, this paper summarizes several key aspects of the representation of linguistic information as linked data from a practical perspective. The main goal of this document is to provide the basic ideas and tools for migrating language resources (lexicons, corpora, etc.) as LD on the Web and to develop some useful NLP tasks with them (e.g., word sense disambiguation). Such material was the basis of a tutorial imparted at the EKAW’14 conference, which is also reported in the paper

Diarization for the annotation of legal videos

    Get PDF
In this paper we analyze legal hearing recordings generated at the Spanish Civil Law Courts, and we present a tool for annotation and navigation across these records. This tool is based on data recovering the legal structure of hearings. To grasp this structure automatically, we apply and compare different audio diarization algorithms to obtain the temporal boundaries of the speakers and their tracking across the hearing. Previous work on legal data will help us to apply diarization techniques into web services platforms (Ontomedia)

Legal knowledge acquisition and multimedia applications

    Get PDF
Search, retrieval, and management of multimedia contents are challenging tasks for users and researchers alike. The aim of e-sentencias Project is to develop a software-hardware system for the global management of the multimedia contents produced by the Spanish Civil Courts. We apply technologies such as the Semantic Web, ontologies, NLP techniques, audio-video segmentation and IR. The ultimate goal is to obtain an automatic classification of images and segments of the audiovisual records that, coupled with textual semantics, allows anefficient navigation and retrieval of judicial documents and additional legal sources

    Get PDF

The e-Sentencias prototype: a procedural ontology for legal multimedia applications in the Spanish Civil Courts

    Get PDF
Search, retrieval, and management of multimedia contents are challenging tasks for users and researchers alike. We introduce a software-hardware system for the global management of the multimedia contents produced by Spanish Civil Courts. The ultimate goal is to obtain an automatic classification of images and segments of the audiovisual records that, coupled with textual semantics, allows an efficient navigation and retrieval of judicial documents and additional legal sources. This paper describes our knowledge acquisition process, sets a typology of Spanish Civil hearings as performed in practice, and a preliminary procedural ontology at its actual stage of development (e-Sentencias ontology). A discussion on procedural, contextual and multimedia ontologies is also provided

Accelerating semantic search with application of specific platforms

    Get PDF
Semantic Search and Ontologies are one of the key technologies that can improve content management. Nonetheless, in order to be widely diffused, these technologies lack real-time capabilities, that speed up both the indexing and the retrieval processes. This contribution presents the approach and strategy proposed to tackle this problem, within the Spanish project E-Sentencias; a project for the development of a management system for lawyers that includes documentation and multimedia related to the management of their legal case

Genomic characterization of individuals presenting extreme phenotypes of high and low risk to develop tobacco-induced lung cancer

Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) may modulate individual susceptibility to carcinogens. We designed a genome-wide association study to characterize individuals presenting extreme phenotypes of high and low risk to develop tobacco-induced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), and we validated our results. We hypothesized that this strategy would enrich the frequencies of the alleles that contribute to the observed traits. We genotyped 2.37 million SNPs in 95 extreme phenotype individuals, that is: heavy smokers that either developed NSCLC at an early age (extreme cases); or did not present NSCLC at an advanced age (extreme controls), selected from a discovery set (n = 3631). We validated significant SNPs in 133 additional subjects with extreme phenotypes selected from databases including >39,000 individuals. Two SNPs were validated: rs12660420 (pcombined  = 5.66 × 10-5 ; ORcombined  = 2.80), mapping to a noncoding transcript exon of PDE10A; and rs6835978 (pcombined  = 1.02 × 10-4 ; ORcombined  = 2.57), an intronic variant in ATP10D. We assessed the relevance of both proteins in early-stage NSCLC. PDE10A and ATP10DmRNA expressions correlated with survival in 821 stage I-II NSCLC patients (p = 0.01 and p < 0.0001). PDE10A protein expression correlated with survival in 149 patients with stage I-II NSCLC (p = 0.002). In conclusion, we validated two variants associated with extreme phenotypes of high and low risk of developing tobacco-induced NSCLC. Our findings may allow to identify individuals presenting high and low risk to develop tobacco-induced NSCLC and to characterize molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis and resistance to develop NSCLC.This work was supported by the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology; Fundación SEOM and Fundación Salud 2000; and Government of Navarra.S
